1. Scale. Quite hard water (with a high lime content or other alkaline compounds) leaves shrinks at the very bottom of the water heater. The tougher the water, the much faster the layer of shrinkage increases. A few, respectively, years after installation, it is certainly necessary to clean the sealed reservoir from it.
